The detail

Everything you need to plan.

Eligibility, documents, timeline and step-by-step process — laid out the way our migration agents actually walk you through it on the first call.

The dossier

The Skilled Independent (189) and Skilled Nominated (190) visas grant permanent residency to skilled workers whose occupation sits on the relevant skilled list, who hold a positive skills assessment, and who meet the points test. The 189 is fully independent; the 190 adds state or territory nomination and bonus points. Both extend permanent residency to your partner and dependent children.

Eligibility Criteria

The Skilled Independent (189) and Skilled Nominated (190) visas are points-tested permanent visas. You may be eligible if you:

  • Have an occupation on the relevant skilled list — the MLTSSL for the 189; a state/territory list for the 190.
  • Hold a positive skills assessment from the assessing authority for your occupation.
  • Score at least 65 points on the SkillSelect points test (a higher score is far more competitive).
  • Are under 45 at the time of invitation.
  • Have at least competent English (IELTS 6 in each band or equivalent; higher scores earn points).
  • Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and receive an invitation to apply.

The 190 adds state nomination and 5 bonus points. Both grant PR to you, your partner and dependent children. Get a free points assessment.

Required Documents

Permanent skilled applications are evidence-heavy. You'll typically need:

Identity & skills

  • Valid passport and birth certificate
  • Positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation
  • Qualifications, transcripts and AQF-equivalence evidence

Points & supporting evidence

  • English test results (IELTS, PTE or equivalent)
  • Employment references and payslips evidencing skilled work experience
  • Partner's skills/English evidence (for partner points)
  • State nomination approval (190)
  • Police clearances and health examinations

We help you maximise and document every points category before you submit your EOI.

Step-by-Step Application Process

  1. Points & occupation assessment — we calculate your score and confirm your occupation and list.
  2. Skills assessment — lodge with the relevant assessing authority.
  3. English test — sit IELTS/PTE to lock in your language points.
  4. Submit EOI — we prepare your SkillSelect Expression of Interest (and 190 state nomination).
  5. Invitation to apply — once invited, we lodge the full visa application within 60 days.
  6. Decision — permanent residency granted for you and your family.

Timeframes depend on occupation ceilings, your points score and invitation rounds — strategy matters as much as paperwork.
