The detail

Everything you need to plan.

The brief

Teaching is one of Australia's most respected and secure professions — and right now one of its most in-demand. NSW, Victoria and Queensland all forecast teacher shortages through 2027, with the strongest need in early childhood, primary, and secondary STEM.

Qualifications & study levels

  • Bachelor of Education — 4 years; direct entry into early childhood, primary or secondary teaching.
  • Master of Teaching — 2 years; for graduates who already hold a bachelor degree in another field (your degree informs your teaching subjects).
  • Graduate Diploma in Education — a shorter initial teacher education option at some providers.

Teaching specialisations

  • Early Childhood (birth–5)
  • Primary (Kindergarten–Year 6)
  • Secondary (subject specialist, e.g. Maths, Science, English)
  • Special & inclusive education

Accreditation & registration

Initial teacher education programs are accredited against AITSL standards and include supervised professional experience in schools. To teach you must register with your state authority — NESA (NSW), VIT (VIC) or QCT (QLD). Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary teachers all sit on the MLTSSL skilled list; AITSL (or ACECQA for early childhood) assesses skills for migration.

Career Outcomes

Qualified teachers enjoy near-immediate employment and a clear PR pathway — all three school-teaching occupations are on the MLTSSL.

  • Early Childhood Teacher (ANZSCO 241111) — birth-to-five settings. AUD $75,000 – $100,000.
  • Primary School Teacher (241213) — Kindergarten to Year 6. AUD $75,000 – $110,000.
  • Secondary School Teacher (241411) — subject specialist. AUD $75,000 – $115,000.
  • Special Education Teacher — support diverse learners. AUD $80,000 – $115,000.
  • Education Leadership (Head Teacher, Deputy, Principal) — AUD $110,000 – $160,000+.

Public-school pay scales are transparent and progress automatically with experience; in NSW an experienced teacher earns around AUD $105,000+. Demand is strongest outside the major metro centres.

Entry Requirements

Academic requirements

  • Bachelor of Education: completed Year 12 or equivalent.
  • Master of Teaching: a completed bachelor degree with curriculum-relevant subjects (these determine the levels/subjects you can teach).
  • A Working with Children Check and police clearance are required for placements.

English language proficiency

Teaching has the highest English requirements of any profession, set for teacher registration:

  • IELTS Academic: 7.5 overall — Speaking & Listening 8.0, Reading & Writing 7.0
  • Alternatively, four years of study in English in a recognised country may satisfy the language requirement.

Intakes, fees & registration

  • Intakes: February and July
  • Tuition: approx. AUD $28,000 – $40,000 per year
  • Registration: NESA (NSW) / VIT (VIC) / QCT (QLD) before you teach
